The modern world is the archive's fifth and final province: the scientific eschatologies that replaced the gods with physics. The heat death, the Big Rip, the Big Crunch, the sun's red-giant expansion — these are the ends written by Adams and Laughlin's Five Ages, by the second law of thermodynamics, by the measured expansion of the universe. They promise nothing, judge no one, and carry the same shape as their mythological ancestors: a final state, a time scale, a way of telling the story of the all.
