Guatemala

The gods made people from mud, then wood, then maize. Only the maize held.

Guatemala is the home of the Popol Vuh, the K'iche' Maya book that records the failed creations — mud people who dissolved, wooden people who were destroyed by their own tools — before the successful creation from maize. The Maya Long Count, whose 2012 cycle-completion became the most believed failed prediction in history, is documented here too.
