Greece

The cosmos as a fire that kindles and goes out — and the island where Revelation was written.

Europedrafted

Greece contributes two things to the archive: the Stoic ekpyrosis, a world-ending fire that is no punishment but the natural breath of the cosmos, and the island of Patmos, where John received the Revelation that became the defining apocalypse of the Christian West. Between Heraclitus's ever-living fire and John's seven-sealed scroll, Greek thought supplied the vocabulary — apokalypsis itself is Greek — and the imagination that later traditions would inherit.
